Family Holiday Show

Goldilocks & The Three Bears : An English Panto

By Damian Trasler, David Lovesy, and Steve Clark

Directed by Patrick Kiley

Our Family Holiday Tradition and our Toys For Tots collection. This year we present another English Panto—a family treat for all ages. What is Panto? English Pantomime (or Panto) is simply dramatic entertainment based on a fairy tale with singing, dancing, slapstick, topical jokes and audience participation. But that’s Oxford’s rather clinical definition of a 300 year old English tradition.

Stories like Cinderella, Aladdin, and Jack and the Beanstalk have been produced in this tradition with the key roles being played by men—particularly the role of the “Dame”. Says director Patrick Kiley, “Short of throwing tomatoes at the performers, the audience really gets involved in these shows - yelling out lines, helping the heroes, jeering the villains and even joining in the songs. It really gets the cast excited too.”

And in the Holiday spirit, TPNC collects gifts for Toys For Tots on December 5. The price of admission for children is one unwrapped toy.

Come join the fun and bring the whole family - no tomatoes though!

The Weir

by Conor McPherson

Directed by Tim Cronin

Conor McPherson penned The Weir at age 26 and it won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play in 1997.  Set in a smoky, peat warmed pub near Leitrim, Connaught in rural Ireland, the play is about four men who have grown up together and are spending a night at the pub.  In the midst of the drinking, laughing, joking and carrying on, there is a drama going on. When a Dublin woman arrives, they fluff their feathers and tell stories, ghostly and otherwise, to probably the first person in decades whom they haven’t seen every day of their lives.  Thus opens a floodgate (weir) of tales, theirs and hers, each tumbling closer to the heart of the human condition.

Performed by Special Arrangement with Dramatists Play Service.

Follies - The Musical in Concert

Directed by Michael Day

Musical Director - Stan Wietrzychowski

Choreographer - Beth Green Schwartz

Summertime is the perfect time for music in Waveny Park.

Follies won seven Tony awards in 1972. We will be doing the shortened, staged concert version. The show takes place at a 1970s reunion; the Weismann Follies’ showgirls and the men in their lives gather at the old Weismann Theatre the night before it is razed to become a parking lot. As occurs in reunions, the characters ruminate on their present and past lives.  The show’s title is a play on words, the foibles of the human condition and the lives of theatre people when troupes like Broadway’s Ziegfeld Follies were the superstars in that bygone era before talking movies, radio, television and YouTube. The show contains songs poignant, witty, gorgeous and complex. Several have become standards including “Broadway Baby,” “I’m Still Here,” “Too Many Mornings,” and “Could I Leave You?”  For someone not thought of as romantic, Sondheim in his homage to the courage of the human spirit and Broadway performers has created an act of love.

During the run of Follies we will be accepting donations for the New Canaan Food Bank, which serves 600 people every two weeks.  Please place your donations in the wicker basket by the box office window.  Town Players will deliver donations to the New Canaan Food Bank the Monday morning following each weekend’s performances.

Tickets (for the musical only) $25 Adults and $20 Students and Seniors (age 62). Click on the TICKET INFO link below for Box Office contacts.
