Candida

by G.B. Shaw

Directed by Skip Ploss

One of the world's great plays recounts the soulful love sickness of 18 year old Marchbanks for Candida, the parson's wife. The parson is at first amused, then incensed and finally angered. In typical Shaw fashion there is a recognition and reversal at the end, when it is the mooning poet who turns out to be the stronger suitor, and the self confident pastor, the weaker. Through it all there is Candida, one of Shaw's greatest insights into womankind; and also the ineffectual curate, the secretary with a crush on her boss, and the father in law who is positively the original bourgeois mercenary.

"Shaw's most popular play."---N.Y. Times.

An Inspector Calls

by J. B. Priestley

Directed by Robert Doran

Although not a thriller, the Town Players of New Canaan’s spring show, J. B. Priestley’s An Inspector Calls is fast paced and often wry.  The essential question, according to director Robert Doran, is “Who killed Eva Smith?”

Set in England on April 14, 1912 within hours of the Titanic’s demise, An Inspector Calls opens when Inspector Goole pays an unexpected visit to the Birlings, a family that is moving through life like a seemingly unsinkable ship until the arrival of the inspector, their iceberg.  Goole, who says he is from the police, cross-examines the Birlings about their role in the suicide of a local young woman.  As layers are peeled away, we see a world where innocence and guilt are blurred—and a family sorely in need of redemption, but in denial of the carnage they leave in their wake. Written in 1945, J. B. Priestley’s take on the Gilded Age remains eerily timeless.

Cast members include Gary Battaglia of Wilton, Tom Butterworth of Rowayton, Susan Doran of New Canaan, Rachel Corn of Ridgefield, Dominque Fernandes of New Canaan, Kyle Runedstad of Norwalk, and Deborah Shields of Norwalk.

The Town Players of New Canaan’s production of J. B. Priestley’s An Inspector Calls will be performed on Friday and Saturday, May 2, 3, 9, 10, 16 & 17 at 8 PM and Sunday, May 4 & 11 at 2:30 PM at the Powerhouse, Waveny Park, New Canaan (3/10 mile to the left/north off Merritt Parkway Exit 37). .  The director and cast will hold a Q&A with the audience immediately following the May 4th performance.  Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for students and seniors (age 62 and older).  To reserve tickets, please call the box office at (203) 966-7371.

The Fantasticks

Music by Harvey Schmidt, Book and Lyrics by Tom Jones

Directed by Michael Day

Music Director - Stan Wietrzychowski

Talk about a time-proven audience-pleaser! "Try To Remember" a time when this romantic charmer wasn't enchanting audiences at New York’s Sullivan Street Playhouse. “The Fantasticks” is the longest-running musical in the world, and with good reason: at the heart of its breathtaking poetry and subtle theatrical sophistication is a purity and simplicity that transcends cultural barriers. The result is a timeless fable of love that manages to be nostalgic and universal at the same time.
